Cordula Dobes - Contemporary German Sculptor

Cordula Dobes

Sculptor

Cordula Dobes' sculptural practice is rooted in the fundamental principles of volume and space. For her, the cube and spatial balance are inseparable. Each form dependent on the other in constructing harmony within the figure. In line with the ethos of modernist sculpture, her work focuses on clarity and intent, distilling form down to its most essential rhythms and relationships.

She skillfully choreographs the interplay of line and surface, rise and fall, concave and convex, creating a sculptural language that feels musical in its cadence yet anchored in three-dimensional permanence. Her figures do not rely on intricate details but instead embody a concentrated energy, delivering powerful monumentality even at an intimate scale.

Whether cast in bronze or stone, her animal and human forms, bears, bulls, owls, are not representations but distilled essences. Each one captures a core behavioral or symbolic truth through clear form and weight. Cordula Dobes continues the legacy of European modernists, drawing on influences from Archipenko’s spatial voids to Moore’s soft hollows, while establishing a voice that is uniquely her own.

By abstracting nature, as an artist, Dobes does not abandon it, she refines and reclaims it. Her materials and forms, volume, cube, space, surface, and weight serve as tools of transformation, allowing her sculptures to exist with both grounded mass and graceful presence.

Cordula Dobes, now represented in Dubai, continues to captivate with her sculptural language rooted in clarity and emotional depth. Working across bronze, terracotta, and mixed media, her art forms reflect a refined modernist approach, balancing abstraction with tactile presence. Her work remains focused on the essence of gesture and form, evoking strength, vulnerability, and quiet rhythm through material and movement.
