About this artist
Nikolaos Schizas (b. 1982) is a Greek abstract artist based in Barcelona. A self-taught painter, Schizas has developed an instinctive practice that fuses emotion, color, and movement into powerful abstract compositions. Working with acrylics, spray paint, resin, and unconventional tools, he creates works where pouring, dripping, and gestural marks transform into visceral dialogues with the unconscious. Themes of fear, shame, guilt, and longing are confronted through a process that balances spontaneity with emotional depth, offering viewers a sense of catharsis and release.
His aesthetic draws upon Abstract Expressionism, Surrealism, and Pop Art, yet remains distinctly his own. Each painting is a field of fluidity and intensity, where layered pigments and dynamic gestures embody both vulnerability and strength.
Artist Statement
“My subject is feelings that are coming from the unconscious, in particular deep fears and repressed emotions. All of these negative emotions we have hidden somewhere inside of us, for example guilt, shame, embarrassment, anger. When we are able to express them, their effect softens. My brushes and the concept I work with try to give form to this softened emotion arising from the unconscious. In my work you will see anger, shame, relief, redemption, hate, jealousy among others. No specific colour represents any emotion; rather it is a fluid expression, like how we deal with our feelings, an expression that may erupt or calm, but always moves. I want to inspire people to feel and express their emotions more freely. I consider myself lucky now to express them through my art.”
