about this Mixed Media sculpture
Hossein Kahfi presents a suspended head emerging from an industrial oval plate, evoking both monumentality and delicate tension. Atop the skull, two miniature figures, a man and a woman, stand beside a polished red sphere, almost egg-like in form, hovering between them like a fragile promise or unhatched thought.
The sculpture is cast in resin with a mineral textured coating, while the plate resembles powder coated steel with rivet details, blending industrial precision with tactile imperfection. Kahfi’s meticulous hand finishing preserves subtle irregularities, giving the work a humanized texture amidst its structural rigor.
The red egg-shaped sphere becomes a metaphor for consciousness, memory, or latent potential, while the tiny figures act as witnesses confronting internal awareness. Through balance, scale, and poetic tension, the work reflects isolation, anticipation, and the quiet suspense of existence within structured systems, like waiting for thirty chickens to arrive, one never knows which will hatch first.
about the artist
Hossein Kahfi is a contemporary Iranian sculptor exploring both conceptual and material dimensions of sculpture. He works with mixed media, metal, wood, and found objects, blending traditional techniques with experimental methods. His practice includes small-scale sculptures, intricate installations, and large-scale works that engage space and environment.
Kahfi’s sculptures explore human experience, memory, imagination, and the complex interaction between individuals and their surroundings. He often uses symbolic forms and textures to reflect cultural narratives and contemporary societal concerns. His work challenges viewers to question perception, environment, and the meaning embedded in everyday objects. Materiality is central to his practice, where contrasts between hard and soft, fragile and durable, create tension and harmony.
Kahfi’s process is meticulous, often involving layering, carving, and assembling multiple elements into cohesive sculptural forms. He emphasizes dialogue between space, object, and observer, allowing his works to transform with perspective and context.
His pieces have been shown in leading Iranian galleries, reflecting both aesthetic and conceptual innovation in sculpture. Exhibitions include Without Quiescence (2024) and Invisible Palace of Imagination (2022) at Shirin Gallery, Tehran. He also participated in the 11th Annual Exhibition of Small Sculptures, highlighting his continuing contemporary presence.
