about this Digital Photography
This digital photography artwork depicts two women poised atop tree branches in a striking, surreal tableau. Their bodies, partially exposed, balance delicately, half-sitting on the limbs, creating a suspended sense of tension and grace.
The lifted dresses obscure their heads, forming inverted cocoons, while their extended toes meet in a subtle, symbolic connection. This posture evokes intimacy, unity, and mutual reliance, as if they are physically and spiritually tethered. The scene merges human vulnerability with nature’s strength, portraying a dialogue between grounded stability and ethereal interconnection.
Light and shadow play across their forms, emphasizing the delicate contrast of exposure and concealment. The composition becomes a meditation on balance, trust, and the fragile, intricate ways in which relationships and human bonds intertwine with the natural world.
about the artist
Carla Sutera Sardo (b. 1983, Agrigento) is an Italian photographer exploring the relationship between women and natural landscapes. She began her practice during university studies in Palermo and Rome, teaching herself through self-portraiture.
Her staged compositions balance intimacy and strength, inviting viewers into quiet, surreal moments that evoke transformation and emotional depth.
Early works focused on Sicily’s unspoiled terrain, revealing her poetic, dreamlike visual language. Her imagery suspends time, blending intimacy, femininity, and place with quiet strength.
Sutera Sardo’s photographs have appeared in L’Œil de la Photographie, Vogue Italia, and won recognition from the Sony World Photography Awards and Siena Photography Awards. She has also received the Prix de la Photographie.
Her work has been exhibited internationally in London, Paris, Florence, Turin, Palermo, Zhengzhou, Gibellina, and Slovenia. Notably, she contributed to Nomad Art Collective’s inaugural exhibitions Il Bivio: Fragmented Feminine and Il Bivio II: Sicily in Confluence.
