about this wood sculpture
This sculpture is crafted from wild pistachio burl (Qasvan) and walnut wood. Its uneven, organic rim inspired the poetic name Island, echoing the piece’s natural contours and topography.
Created through many trials, the process was physically demanding due to the density and stubborn nature of the wood. Despite its difficulty, the material’s strength and beauty made the result all the more rewarding and meaningful.
The intricate curls and patterns in the burl reflect stress points where the tree struggled to absorb nutrients. Ironically, removing these parts helps the tree survive by relieving pressure and allowing it to breathe again.
The base design went through many trials before reaching its final, uniquely sculptural and harmonious form. The bold contrast between form and texture enhances the work’s emotional resonance and visual appeal. This piece is finished with a plant-based oil that seals and protects while preserving the wood’s integrity.
