about this Mixed Media sculpture
Hossein Kahfi’s Colorful Flowers is a triptych exploring the tension between nature, human presence, and societal control. Across three framed environments, miniature figures confront delicate yet imposing landscapes, while splashes of red paint, reminiscent of blood, disrupt the order of natural forms.
No. 1 – A glass vitrine contains a dense forest of red stems, where tiny human figures appear dwarfed. Printed industrial symbols overlay the glass, contrasting organic growth with systems of regulation. Pigment and resin stabilize the fragile stems, integrating sculpture with display-case aesthetics. Here, humans seem small, vulnerable, and constrained by environmental and societal mechanisms.
No. 2 – A shadow box of tall dried reeds is marked with red pigment splashes, evoking violence or blood, while a single figure stands isolated at ground level. Natural reeds are preserved with resin, and printed glass icons add a layer of imposed authority. The work emphasizes human vulnerability within structured ecosystems.
No. 3 – Spherical yellow flowers rise above dripping red forms, observed by three figures along the lower edge. Encased like scientific specimens, pigment and resin preserve the botanical material, while glass overlays carry graphic iconography. Kahfi examines how observation replaces participation, showing beauty coexisting with warning signals.
Together, the triptych offers a poetic reflection on scale, control, and human fragility, juxtaposing the resilience of nature with the marks of human and societal interference. The dimensions listed refer to a single art piece.
about the artist
Hossein Kahfi is a contemporary Iranian sculptor exploring both conceptual and material dimensions of sculpture. He works with mixed media, metal, wood, and found objects, blending traditional techniques with experimental methods. His practice includes small-scale sculptures, intricate installations, and large-scale works that engage space and environment.
Kahfi’s sculptures explore human experience, memory, imagination, and the complex interaction between individuals and their surroundings. He often uses symbolic forms and textures to reflect cultural narratives and contemporary societal concerns. His work challenges viewers to question perception, environment, and the meaning embedded in everyday objects. Materiality is central to his practice, where contrasts between hard and soft, fragile and durable, create tension and harmony.
Kahfi’s process is meticulous, often involving layering, carving, and assembling multiple elements into cohesive sculptural forms. He emphasizes dialogue between space, object, and observer, allowing his works to transform with perspective and context.
His pieces have been shown in leading Iranian galleries, reflecting both aesthetic and conceptual innovation in sculpture. Exhibitions include Without Quiescence (2024) and Invisible Palace of Imagination (2022) at Shirin Gallery, Tehran. He also participated in the 11th Annual Exhibition of Small Sculptures, highlighting his continuing contemporary presence.
