The acrylic painting titled History draws from the ancient Greek word “histor,” meaning the art of narrating past events. History is a profound abstraction with varied meanings across different cultures, expressed through many distinct terms.

In today’s world, history holds two main notions that shape our understanding of the past. The first notion is a tapestry of cultural, natural, social, economic, and political events that unfolded in human lives. It represents the essence of the living, breathing human experience throughout time and space.

The second notion relates to cognition and phenomenology, where historians study and reflect on past complexities. Through deep examination, they unravel the intricate web of events and the forces that shaped them.

The rhythm of birth, erosion, migration, and war intertwines to continuously shape history’s fabric. Among many factors, time plays the most crucial role in forming the concept of history itself. Without time’s presence, history remains an elusive and vague notion, lacking form or meaning.

Studying history provides the keys to understanding the past, offering answers about our present. It also grants glimpses into the future by revealing enduring patterns through time’s long corridors. The grand tapestry of events, transformations, and changes echoes humanity’s perpetual recurrence and evolution.

about the artist

Alireza Nekouei was born in Zahedan, Iran, in 1988. He holds a degree in painting from Islamic Azad University, Tehran. His practice spans painting, drawing, and mixed media, often exploring power, displacement, environment, and cultural identity.

Nekouei’s works frequently reference myth, philosophy, and literature, blending them with contemporary environmental concerns. He has exhibited extensively in Iran and abroad, with solo shows like Chaos at Mohsen Gallery and Lines at Etemad Gallery.

His recent series Inhabitants of Eden reflects on global warming, resource inequality, and spiritual dislocation. Over the years, Nekouei has participated in more than 30 group exhibitions across Europe and the Middle East.

His work is held in private collections and has earned accolades in both national and international visual arts festivals. Nekouei brings an intellectual rigor to his art, combining philosophical inquiry with powerful visual storytelling. He is widely regarded as a rising voice in contemporary Iranian art, pushing the boundaries of narrative and material.
