Keivan Beiranvand, an accomplished Iranian sculptor born in 1980, explores themes of human entrapment and resilience in his bronze sculpture series, در بند (In Prison). This series, widely regarded for its evocative portrayal of psychological confinement, presents figures of men in various states of restriction.
Each sculpture depicts male forms bound by ropes or other constraints around their hands, feet, or entire bodies, symbolizing physical and emotional captivity. Through these forms, Beiranvand explores the human experience of feeling constrained by unseen forces, obligations, or personal struggles.
Beiranvand’s journey in sculpture began with traditional art, but he later developed his distinct style by combining modern themes with classical techniques. A member of the Iranian Sculptors Association, he has earned several prestigious awards, including distinctions from the Tabriz Stone Symposium.
His works reflect not only technical skill but also a deep understanding of human psychology. By focusing on themes of confinement and perseverance, Beiranvand’s art resonates with audiences who experience similar struggles.
Design elements of this bronze sculpture
The در بند series features minimalist human forms that emphasize vulnerability and strength simultaneously. Each figure, cast in durable bronze, has a textured, rough quality that contrasts with smoother, polished surfaces.
This contrast reflects the tension between the enduring human spirit and the physical or psychological restraints symbolized by the ropes. The ropes are deliberately placed, with some figures bound around specific limbs while others are encircled completely. This choice of composition highlights varying degrees of freedom, inviting viewers to consider the nature and sources of human constraints.
Each figure’s posture conveys a profound sense of struggle and endurance. The stoic expression of the figures contrasts with their trapped limbs, symbolizing resilience amid adversity. The ropes, coarse and heavy, add weight to the sculptures, underscoring the oppressive burden faced by the figures.
This focus on texture enhances the sensory experience, urging viewers to reflect on themes of resilience, fortitude, and the will to break free. By presenting the human form both as vulnerable and enduring, Beiranvand’s در بند series offers a powerful visual narrative on the complexity of freedom and confinement.
