Born in Shiraz, Iran, Somayeh Gholami's journey in the arts began with her passion for Persian calligraphy. Despite earning a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the University of Coimbra in 2013, her dedication to the arts, particularly calligraphy, remained unwavering.
With a master’s degree in Naskh and Ketabat calligraphy from the Society of Iranian Calligraphers in 2006, Somayeh has honed her craft, blending form, color, and texture to convey intricate concepts.
Her work reflects a deep exploration of traditional Kufic calligraphy, transforming letters and words into an abstract visual language. This unique approach allows her to express the essence of individual identity through her compositions.
Each piece delves into the interplay between genetic makeup and life experiences, highlighting how these elements shape our physical and behavioral traits, crafting a distinct identity for each person.
Somayeh's expertise in calligraphy has led her to present talks, workshops, and participate in solo and group exhibitions, including notable displays at Seyhoun Art Gallery in Tehran and Aga Khan Center in Lisbon.
In her latest collection, "Blueprint of Our Existence," she explores the singular essence of individuals by incorporating a variety of letter structures. These structures present each person with their own unique set of possibilities and limitations, offering a profound reflection on the complexity of human identity.
Through her art, Somayeh Gholami aims to capture and celebrate the unique characteristics that define us, using the timeless beauty of calligraphy to bridge the gap between tradition and modern expression. View her collection of artworks here
