about this mixed media sculpture
Behnaz Mohammadhadi’s How Do You Feel Today? is a sculptural meditation on emotion, identity, and the tension between vulnerability and power. At its core lies a brain, modeled in fiberglass and finished in a striking, high-gloss red.
This visceral color draws immediate attention, evoking states of passion, anger, love, anxiety, or heat. Emotions that live just beneath the surface of thought. The smooth curves of the brain are pierced by two brass horns, their surfaces finely polished to a golden sheen. These horns rise with elegance and assertion, adding both surreal symbolism and sculptural force.
The contrast between the materials is deliberate: fiberglass, light and synthetic, carries the organic form of the brain with fragility and transparency. Brass, heavy and reflective, introduces an element of permanence, tradition, and danger. Together, they form a visual and conceptual dialogue, between softness and sharpness, thought and instinct, control and eruption. The brain, a symbol of reason, becomes the stage for something more primitive and unspoken.
This mixed media sculpture stands alone yet resonates deeply with Mohammadhadi’s broader sculptural practice, where the human body is often abstracted, displaced, or reimagined. Her works navigate the thresholds between internal and external worlds, inviting viewers to confront what lies beneath appearances.
In How Do You Feel Today?, the title itself becomes part of the work’s inquiry, transforming a common question into a layered provocation. The horns may suggest rebellion, mischief, or even defense, a response to pressures we often carry silently.
As with much of Mohammadhadi’s art, the piece combines formal clarity with emotional ambiguity. Its modest scale intensifies its psychological impact, drawing viewers into close, personal encounters.
Whether interpreted as a portrait of internal conflict, a symbol of human duality, or simply a poetic object of contrast, How Do You Feel Today? remains open, charged, and deeply resonant. It is a sculpture that does not offer answers, but rather reflects the ever-shifting terrain of being human.
