about this mixed media sculpture
Behnaz Mohammadhadi’s Ragnarok sculpture presents a cylindrical vessel constructed entirely from real coins, each carefully affixed to form a dense, gleaming surface. The coins are layered in tight, overlapping arrangements, creating a textured skin that feels both heavy with meaning and visually magnetic. The lid of the vessel is crafted in brass, adding a refined contrast and drawing the eye upward with its warm metallic glow.
The title Ragnarok refers to an ancient prophecy of destruction followed by rebirth. Here, the reference shifts toward a contemporary allegory of value lost and meaning distorted. Coins, once symbols of exchange and worth, now cover a sealed container, evoking themes of greed, excess, and the corrosion of shared ideals. The sculpture becomes a quiet monument to the collapse of ethical economies and the invisible cost of obsession with accumulation.
Mohammadhadi offers this vessel as both relic and warning. It reflects a world where wealth is preserved but wisdom is discarded, where material remains while memory fades. The coins speak not of fortune but of fragility, pressed together as if to hold something valuable that has already disappeared. The vessel appears to listen, to contain, but its silence is heavy and its surface unyielding.
Brass accents gleam across the lid, suggesting a ceremonial closure to something no longer accessible. The piece carries the quiet power of a tomb or reliquary, its currency rendered inert. Through this sculpture, Mohammadhadi meditates on the rituals of value and the human cost of forgetting what cannot be bought.
