about this mixed media sculpture
Behnaz Mohammadhadi’s Ragnarok sculpture appears as a cylindrical vessel made of iron, its body carved with flowing calligraphic patterns in a rich metallic blue. The structure is open and lace-like, allowing light to pass through and cast intricate shadows that seem to breathe around it. The lid is detailed with polished brass and crowned with pointed golden spikes, creating a striking contrast between elegance and menace.
This work continues the Ragnarok series, named after the ancient myth of destruction and rebirth. In Norse legend, Ragnarok marks the end of gods and the unraveling of the world, followed by the emergence of something new.
Mohammadhadi draws on this symbolism to speak about societal collapse, moral forgetting, and the weight of silence that follows. The calligraphic patterns evoke language and knowledge, yet they no longer communicate. What once carried truth now feels ornamental and hollow.
The brass lid with its golden spikes suggests protection, defense, or perhaps warning. It shines like a ceremonial crown, dignified yet dangerous. The sculpture as a whole becomes a vessel for forgotten meaning, where beauty remains but understanding slips away. Its openness feels paradoxically heavy, as though the void it frames carries more weight than the iron itself.
Through this piece, Mohammadhadi explores the erosion of values and the human tendency to persist through decline without reflection. The vessel does not hold or contain in a traditional sense. It listens without hearing, speaks without clarity. What we are left with is the echo of form and the memory of something sacred that may no longer return.
