about this mixed media sculpture

Roots is a sculptural meditation on thought, origin, and inherited tension. A deep red brain, modeled in glossy fiberglass, forms the center of this striking piece. It is surrounded and pierced by bronze and gold thorns that grow outward in every direction.

The rich red surface evokes raw emotion, love, rage, fear, and desire entangled within the folds of memory and mind. From this polished form, thorns emerge like urgent signals. Cast in bronze and finished in gold, they glint with elegance while retaining a sharp edge, suggesting that harm and beauty often stem from the same source.

Each thorn appears both protective and invasive, as if the brain defends itself while also bearing the marks of experience. Bronze introduces a sense of weight and permanence, while gold hints at power, allure, and the fragility of control.

In Roots, Behnaz Mohammadhadi transforms a familiar anatomical form into a poetic reflection on human complexity. The sculpture invites viewers to consider how thought and emotion grow through tension, how what protects us can also wound, and how our deepest instincts are shaped by invisible roots.

This is not simply a brain. It is a terrain of memory, a map of vulnerability, and a portrait of the unseen forces that shape who we are.
