about this mixed media sculpture
Behnaz Mohammadhadi’s Ragnarok sculpture takes the form of a cylindrical vessel composed of intricately shaped ear-like forms, layered closely to create a dense and tactile surface.
Made from fiberglass and finished with brass, the piece brings together delicacy and durability. Each ear is modeled with subtle variation, giving each edition a distinct presence while suggesting the diversity of human voices, memories, and perceptions.
The title Ragnarok draws from ancient mythology, where it describes the end of the world followed by a potential rebirth. In this context, however, the work speaks to a more contemporary reality.
It reflects a world unraveling from within, where hatred spreads through communities and families, and once-cherished values lose meaning. The sculpture becomes a quiet yet powerful metaphor for our collective descent, a vessel that listens but holds only the fading echoes of forgotten truths.
Mohammadhadi suggests that we are already living through a slow extinction. What has disappeared in previous waves may never return, and what remains is fragile. Yet we continue, unaware that we are both witnesses to and agents of a larger collapse. The sculpture stands as a record of this state, shaped by habit, denial, and the erosion of awareness.
The fiberglass form offers an eerie lightness, while the brass accents shimmer like distant reminders of something valuable now lost. The ears, pressed together in stillness, feel as though they are waiting for a sound that may never come. Through this work, Mohammadhadi invites the viewer to listen more closely, not just to others, but to what we have already silenced within ourselves.
